The Lakhimpur Kheri district is surrounded by the India-Nepal border and the districts of Pilibhit, Hardoi, Shahjahanpur, Sitapur, and Behraich. Earlier it was known as Laxmipur district. This district was surrounded by pine trees in ancient times.

This district National Park (Dudhwa Tiger Reserve) of Uttar Pradesh state is very famous for Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. It is the only national park in Uttar Pradesh. In 1977, the government declared a 614 sq km area of Lakhimpur Kheri district as Dudhwa National Park.
In the year 1987, Dudhwa National Park and Kishunpur Pashu Vihar were merged as Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. After mixing the two, its area increased to 818 square kilometers. Many rare Rare species are found in this park.
This district is also connected to Mahabharata. Ancient mounds have been found in many villages here. It was part of Khairabad under Akbar's rule in the 17th century.
